Ghostly galas lets big kids dress up

EDWARDS - Who said Halloween is just for little goblins?

It's one of the few days of the year when grown-ups can release their inner devils -
or whatever creepy or kindly hidden personality lurks within their minds.

It's the one night a femme fatale can emerge from a bookish librarian, a techie
might morph into Rambo or a mild mannered husband can don his wife's negligee -
and only be mildly taunted.

The over-30 crowd probably gets a bigger kick out of the night than the younger
set because it's a night to re-live times before the responsibilities of parenthood,
when you could ring someone else's doorbell and scream "trick or treat," then
divide up the Pixie Sticks and Tootsie Rolls late into night.

So, why aren't there more parties for the big, big kids?

The Eagle County Charter Academy is in its third year of hosting an adult costume
party. For the last four years, the Masquerade Escapade was held at the Vilar
Center, but this year it has a new name and a new organizer is taking on a new
personality and venue at the Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek.

The Oct. 28 party is called the "Ghostly Gala" and the word is flying through town
that it will be a hauntingly fun time.

"We're anticipating a fun and spooky evening," said Beth White, chairwoman of the
event. "Village Hall and the Park Hyatt have great potential and we're taking
advantage of it."

Dana Cook, heading up the decorations committee, has been hard at work
collecting spiders, rats, skeletons and cobwebs.

The auction committee has been hoarding items for a lavish silent auction and
some extra specials items for the live auction, including a box at the Kentucky
Derby, spring break at the Casa Magna Resort in Cancun, a private dinner in your
home for eight prepared by chef Angelee Aurillo of the French Press, a day skiing
with Olympian Billy Kidd and parking for the season at Golden Peak, among other
items.White promises a brief auction of only around six or eight items.

"We want everyone to have a great time dancing and having fun with their friends,"
she said.

The band, Tina Marx and the Millionaires, is coming from Denver to provide the
entertainment.

The Eagle County Charter Academy is a public school, part of the Eagle County
School District, and raises much of its funds from the gala to help keep the school
up and running. The school has 288 students in kindergarten through eighth
grade, and extra funding is necessary.

In its 11th year of operations, the academy is the first in the state to be awarded a
30-year charter, and has received the John Irvin School of Excellence award, which
is based on its state test scores, every year since it has been given.

As far as the Halloween party, you'll want to show up in costume. At last year's
event, only a couple of guests arrived in their civvies and no one recognized them.

Of course, a costume can be elaborate or simple. If you're costume-phobic, throw
on a cowboy hat and boots, and you're set.

There will be a contest for the best individual, couple and group. If you're the most
creative, you'll leave with a great prize.

But be warned . . . even though the event raises money for a local school, it's
strictly for grown-up ghouls. Leave the little goblins at home.
