Bellevue
Larimer County
Bellvue sits at the mouth of Rist Canyon northwest of Fort Collins just a mile west of
the town of LaPorte. It has something no other town has: the "Bellvue Fold," a bare
rock formation that geologists say is the only one of its kind in the United States.
Bellvue has two churches, a school, post office, grange hall and a general store (now
vacant), all of which attest to a rich history. The area is divided into the "valley"
community, and those who live "up the canyon."
Founded in 1872 by Jacob Flowers, Bellvue's early economy was driven by a flour
mill, saw mill, stock raising, farming, and nearby rock quarries. Local rock was often
transported to Fort Collins, Greeley and Denver to build stately homes.
In the 1880s Bellvue was booming with hotels, rooming houses, a town hall,
butcher shop, saloon and jail. Today, however, the area is more a collection of quiet
and remote residences than a bustling town.
