Winter Park

Winter Park in winter ~ Above photo from:

Winter Park was previously named "West Portal." Before that it was known as Idlewild.

Winter Park is situated in a high mountain park at elevations of 9,000 ft. The valley is surrounded by the Arapaho National Forest
and three Wilderness areas: Indian Peaks, Byers Peak and Vasquez.

The town of Winter Park was first settled in 1923 and incorporated in 1978. It came into existence as a construction camp during the
building of the Moffat Tunnel. The west portal is located here, hence the original name of West Portal.

As early as 1929, hearty winter sports enthusiasts were getting off the regularly scheduled trains there to ski the trails that were
being developed. Regular weekend service on a special ski train began in January 1938. That same year, the U.S. Forest Service
gave permission to the City and County of Denver to develop land near West Portal for winter sports, constructing ski-tows and trails.
Winter Park ski area was formally opened in 1940.

With the consent of postal authorities, West Portal’s name was changed to Winter Park to publicize the ski area.  Benjamin F.
Stapleton, the mayor of Denver at the time, championed the cause of the name change to help publicize the winter sports of the area.
The town has now grown into a classic resort town and the ski area management has been recently turned over to the Intrawest
Corporation by the City and County of Denver.

                                                          Murder Mystery Getaways!

* Please Note -  I don't know if this lodge happens to be haunted or not....I only have it listed here because
they have murder mystery events.

If you have ever wanted to kill someone, this getaway may be your chance to do just that.  This fun and suspense filled weekend
gives guests the opportunity to play a part in committing and solving a murder.  We also have roles for those who prefer not to
participate ... like the victim.  Here is how it works:

Once you have made your reservations, we will send you a personality profile to complete and send back to us.

Each profile will include an entree choice for Saturday night's dinner

After we have gathered all of the profiles, we will assign you a role and send it to you along with the list of characters and the plot.

You will be given suggested attire and behavior with your role

The weekend begins on Friday night with a dessert buffet served from 8:00pm until 9:00pm.  Everyone will be wearing a tag with their
character's name.   You will get to meet all the other guests and begin to figure out who is a villain and who is a hero, who dies and
who done it.

Saturday morning will start out with a full and elegant candlelight breakfast.  You will be on your own during the day.  We would be
delighted to arrange for passes to the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort, complete with full body message or make a reservation for a
horseback ride.  Just let us know what we can do to make this a "killer" getaway!  You will want to return to the Outpost by 4:30pm to
have time to change into costume and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine before leaving for the Murder.

The murder and the dinner will take place at The Outpost.  The evening begins with a cocktail hour of passed hors d'ourves and two
complimentary glasses of wine.  Mingle and meet as many people as you can.  Try to guess who the victim and killer might be.  Ask
lots of questions and play your role to the hilt, because we are counting on you to solve this despicable crime.  Sometime during the
meal the poor victim will die and the real fun of solving the crime begins!

What is included?  Your Murder Mystery Getaway will include a welcoming dessert buffet Friday night, Friday and Saturday night's
lodging, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, dinner with wine, and the murder for a total of $280 per couple.  You may add 2 passes
for the Hot Springs for only $28 per couple.  So get out your Sherlock hat and pipe and get on up here for a killer of a good time.
Available dates are Every weekend in October and the first weekend of November.
